The AeroPress is the most forgiving brew method we know. You can change the recipe, flip the thing upside down, brew for 2 minutes or 4 — and it almost always produces something good. Which makes it perfect for people who want great coffee without a chemistry degree.
Here's how we brew it at Pattern, and what we've learned doing it with Chocoberry and Winter Scoop.
What you need
- AeroPress (original or Go)
- Freshly ground Pattern Coffee - medium-fine grind (think table salt)
- Kettle, ideally with temperature control
- Scale (optional but useful)
- Timer (your phone works fine)
The recipe
Dose: 15g coffee
Water: 200ml at 92°C (off the boil for 30 seconds if you don't have a gooseneck)
Brew time: 2 minutes 30 seconds
Output: One strong, concentrated cup - dilute with 50–100ml hot water to taste
The method
- Rinse your filter paper with hot water - this removes any papery taste and preheats the chamber. Discard the rinse water.
- Add your ground coffee. Give the AeroPress a gentle shake to level the bed.
- Start your timer. Pour your water slowly and evenly over the coffee. Give it a gentle stir - 3 or 4 rotations with the stirrer or a spoon.
- Place the plunger on top - don't push yet. This creates a vacuum that slows the extraction and keeps it even.
- At 2 minutes, begin pressing slowly and steadily. Aim for 20–30 seconds of gentle, consistent pressure. Stop when you hear the hiss of air - don't force the last drops through.
What to expect with Chocoberry
Chocoberry's natural process makes it exceptionally well-suited to the AeroPress. You'll get all the strawberry jam upfront and the dark cacao really comes through in the body when you brew inverted. Try adding a small square of dark chocolate on the side.
What to expect with Winter Scoop
Winter Scoop is richer and rounder - the vanilla ice cream notes turn almost buttery with the AeroPress. If you're brewing it in the evening, try it long: 250ml total water, no dilution, and let it cool slightly before drinking.
